T
his is
an Antique hand forged Iron and brass combination fish and Buffalo hide scale,
circa 1840’s to the 1880’s. These scales were used for many purposes; but most
were primarily associated as being a small, portable scale used to weigh
buffalo hides on the Western American Frontier by Buffalo Hunters who sold
hides to brokers who shipped the hides back East, or Buffalo meat to feed the
Soldiers or the workers on the Railroad. Hunters, Mountain Men, Trappers,
Frontiersmen also used these for weighing hides and in trading goods. I have
never seen another one with the stamping of a fish and the 1 -18 kilo scale one
side. Almost all of these were made in Germany, as was this one, and almost all
are unmarked, as is this one. This is a very unusual variation of this scale.
This scale has a brass Crescent shaped panel with a Stamped Fish and a scale
from 0 to 18 kilos on one side when hung from the small round ring and using
the small hook, The obverse side has a scale for Buffalo hides with a scale
from 10 to 150 kilos when hung from the large Iron round ring and using the
large Iron hook. Note the thickness of the Iron frame that acts as the spring
for both scales was especially thickened or thinned, and tempered for the
particular scale, calibrated by placing the hanging ring and hook at the
appropriate place on the frame; then calibrating the scale by stamping the
brass crescent on both sides while using the same Iron pointer. The scale is
about 10 7/8″ long and 6 1/8″ wide (with hooks extended). The heavy
duty oval shaped iron body is about 3 3/4″ X 3″. This scale is in
fine condition, and has a nice, light natural aged patina overall to the Iron
that collectors love to see. As usual, the brass has been polished in the past,
but has a light aged patina. Weight is 10.5 ounces or 299 grams. I have no way
to check its current calibration, but perhaps could still be used today in the
field for small game, big fish, or deer hunting. This is a handsome piece of
handmade Folk Art is complete and 100% original; suitable as a wall hanger or
decorator piece for any Scale, Fish, Buffalo, Hunting, Hunter, Mountain Man,
Trapper, Frontiersman, Old West, or Western Americana collection or display,
Man cave, Den or Office conversation piece / desk accessory / paperweight.
